Getting a copy of your credit report is the first step to ensuring that you are financially stable and as debt free as possible. There are a number of different ways to get a copy of your report; however, it is important to understand which methods are connected with a reputable credit agency and which methods are simply meant to siphon money from consumers worried about their credit.
The first and most common method is by visiting annualcreditreport.com. This site provides consumers with a free credit report from each of three major credit report agencies --- Experian, TransUnion and Equifax --- once per year. You can download a report from each of the agencies, absolutely free; however, your credit score is not included in these downloads. There are a number of paid services from which you can order a copy of your credit report and your credit score. In fact, some of these sites offer a free credit score, usually only applicable the first time you see it. Thereafter, you usually have to pay to get it again. However, it is important to read all of the fine print because many of these services place you on a monthly recurring payment plan for continued access to your credit score and/or report.
It is important to have the most updated copy of your credit report, especially if you are planning on applying for credit (a credit card, a loan for a car, etc.). Credit is important in many aspects of life. A good credit rating is often required for even basic necessities such as insurance, renting an apartment or home, obtaining bank accounts and applying for jobs.
The three national credit reporting agencies are:
- Experian - A top credit reporting agency, we are dedicated to helping people get their credit reports, scores & prevent identity theft
- Equifax - Equifax compiles credit reporting data from many sources to give you a complete credit report
- Transunion - View your credit report and credit score online at TransUnion.com
